How to Repair a Dripping Bathroom Mixer Tap

A dripping bathroom mixer tap can be a frustrating and wasteful problem. But don't worry, it's usually pretty easy to fix. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get your tap back in working order.

1. Gather Your Tools

Before you start, you'll need to gather a few tools:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Plumber's putty
  • Replacement washers (if necessary)

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

Once you have your tools, the first step is to turn off the water supply to your tap. This is usually done by turning off the isolation valves under your sink.

3. Remove the Tap Handle

Once the water is turned off, you can remove the tap handle. This is usually done by unscrewing the small screw that holds it in place. Once the screw is removed, the handle should come off easily.

4. Remove the Cartridge

Once the handle is removed, you will see the cartridge. The cartridge is a cylindrical piece of metal that contains the washers that create the seal between the tap and the water supply.

To remove the cartridge, you will need to use an adjustable wrench to loosen the retaining nut that holds it in place. Once the nut is loosened, you should be able to pull the cartridge out of the tap body.

5. Inspect the Washers

Once you have the cartridge out, you can inspect the washers. If the washers are worn or damaged, they will need to be replaced.

To replace the washers, simply remove the old washers from the cartridge and replace them with new ones.

6. Reassemble the Tap

Once the washers have been replaced, you can reassemble the tap. To do this, simply insert the cartridge back into the tap body and tighten the retaining nut. Then, replace the tap handle and screw it back into place.

7. Turn on the Water Supply

Once the tap is reassembled, you can turn on the water supply and check for leaks.

With a little care and attention, you should be able to fix a dripping bathroom mixer tap yourself in just a few minutes.
