How To Repair Leaking Bathroom Faucet Handle

A leaky faucet handle is a common problem that can waste a lot of water and increase your utility bills. Fortunately, it's a relatively easy repair that you can do yourself with a few simple tools.

Tools and materials you'll need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Replacement faucet handle
  • Plumber's putty (optional)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet.

There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.
  2. Remove the old faucet handle.

Most faucet handles are held in place by a screw. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw, then pull the handle straight up to remove it.
  3. Inspect the faucet stem.

The faucet stem is the part of the faucet that turns the water on and off. If the stem is damaged or worn, it will need to be replaced. To inspect the stem, remove the packing nut (the large nut that is located below the handle). If the stem is damaged, you will need to purchase a replacement stem.
  4. Install the new faucet handle.

Apply a small amount of plumber's putty to the base of the new handle, then insert the handle into the faucet stem. Tighten the packing nut to secure the handle in place.
  5. Turn on the water supply to the faucet.

Check for leaks around the handle. If there are any leaks, tighten the packing nut further.

Tips:

  • If your faucet handle is leaking from the base, it may be necessary to replace the O-rings. O-rings are small rubber gaskets that seal the handle to the faucet stem.
  • If you are not comfortable making this repair yourself, you can call a plumber for assistance.
