How to Replace a Single-Handle Bathroom Faucet Cartridge

A single-handle bathroom faucet is a common fixture in many homes. It offers convenience and ease of use, but over time, the cartridge inside can wear down, causing leaks, drips, and even reduced water pressure. When this happens, replacing the cartridge is a relatively straightforward repair that most homeowners can handle themselves.

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to replace a single-handle bathroom faucet cartridge. By following these instructions, you can restore your faucet to its optimal functionality and eliminate any annoying leaks or drips.

1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Supplies

Before starting, gather the following tools and supplies to ensure a smooth and efficient process:

  • New faucet cartridge compatible with your existing faucet model.
  • Adjustable wrench.
  • Channel-lock pliers.
  • Phillips screwdriver.
  • Flathead screwdriver.
  • Small basin or bucket.
  • Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant.
  • Clean cloth to wipe away any excess water or debris.

2. Shut Off the Water Supply

The first step is to shut off the water supply to your bathroom faucet. Locate the shut-off valve for the faucet's hot and cold water lines, usually found underneath the sink or at the main water line. Turn both valves completely clockwise until they stop.

3. Drain the Faucet

Once the water supply is shut off, open the faucet to drain any remaining water from the lines. This will help minimize any potential mess and ensure a cleaner working environment.

4. Remove the Handle and Cap

Next, remove the handle and cap of the faucet. The handle may be secured by a setscrew or a decorative cap. Use a Phillips or flathead screwdriver to remove the setscrew or unscrew the decorative cap. Once the handle is loose, carefully pull it off the faucet stem.

5. Remove the Cartridge Retainer

The cartridge retainer is a small nut or collar that holds the cartridge in place. Locate the retainer, typically near the base of the faucet stem, and loosen it using an adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers. Once the retainer is loose, remove it completely.

6. Remove the Old Cartridge

Now, the old cartridge can be removed. Carefully pull it straight out of the faucet stem. If the cartridge is stuck, you may need to gently rock it back and forth to loosen it. Do not force it out, as this could damage the faucet stem.

7. Install the New Cartridge

With the old cartridge removed, install the new one. Make sure the new cartridge is properly aligned and seated securely in the faucet stem. Apply a thin layer of Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant to the threads of the cartridge retainer. Then, screw the retainer back onto the faucet stem, snugging it up firmly but not overtightening it.

8. Reassemble the Faucet

Reassemble the faucet, starting with the handle and cap. Make sure they are securely fastened and align properly. Then, turn the water supply back on slowly, checking for any leaks or drips. If you notice any leaks, tighten the retainer or handle as needed. If there are no leaks, your faucet repair is complete.

9. Testing Your Faucet

Once the faucet is reassembled, test its functionality by running both hot and cold water. Ensure that the flow is consistent and that there are no leaks or drips. If you encounter any issues, double-check your work and ensure that all connections are secure. If the problem persists, consult a professional plumber for assistance.
