How to Replace a Bathroom Sink Under Granite

Replacing a bathroom sink under granite can seem like a daunting task, but with the right instructions and tools, it's a project you can handle yourself. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you replace your bathroom sink.

Tools and Materials Required

Before you start, gather the necessary supplies:
1. New bathroom sink
2. Plumber's putty or silicone caulk
3. Adjustable wrench
4. Basin wrench
5. Hacksaw or reciprocating saw
6. Safety glasses
7. Gloves
8. Measuring tape
9. Pencil or marker
10. Utility knife
11. Level

Step 1: Prepare the Area

Turn off the water supply to the sink and open the faucet to release any remaining water. Protect the counter and floor around the sink with drop cloths or old towels. Remove any soap dispensers or other accessories from the sink.

Step 2: Disconnect the Drain

Place a bucket under the drainpipe to catch any water. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts holding the drainpipe to the sink. Remove the pipe and set it aside.

Step 3: Disconnect the Water Supply Lines

Use the basin wrench to loosen the nuts connecting the water supply lines to the sink. Disconnect the lines and allow any remaining water to drain into the bucket.

Step 4: Remove the Old Sink

If the sink is held in place by brackets, remove them using a screwdriver or wrench. Grip the sink firmly and lift it straight up to remove it from the countertop. Be careful not to damage the countertop or the sink.

Step 5: Clean the Surface

Use a utility knife to remove any old sealant or debris from the countertop around the sink hole. Wipe the surface clean with rubbing alcohol to ensure good adhesion for the new sealant.

Step 6: Apply Plumber's Putty or Caulk

Roll out a rope of plumber's putty or apply a generous bead of silicone caulk around the edge of the new sink. Smooth out the putty or caulk with your finger or a putty knife.

Step 7: Place the New Sink

Carefully lower the new sink into place, aligning it with the hole in the countertop. Press down firmly to seat the sink into the sealant.

Step 8: Level the Sink

Use a level to check if the sink is level front to back and side to side. Adjust the sealant or putty as needed to level the sink.

Step 9: Reconnect the Drain

Place the drainpipe back into the sink and tighten the nuts to secure it. Reconnect the water supply lines and tighten the nuts hand-tight, then use the basin wrench to further tighten them about a quarter turn.

Step 10: Install Accessories

Reinstall any soap dispensers or other accessories to the sink.

Step 11: Clean Up

Remove any excess sealant or putty from the sink and countertop. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If any leaks occur, tighten the connections further or apply additional sealant.

Congratulations! You have successfully replaced the bathroom sink under granite.
