How to Replace the Drain Pipe in Your Bathroom Sink

Step 1: Prepare the Work Area

Place the bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out during the process. Put on gloves to protect your hands from the dirty water.

Step 2: Remove the Existing Drain Pipe

Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the drain pipe to the sink drain flange and the P-trap. Disconnect the pipe from the flange by pulling it straight down. If the pipe is stuck, use the utility knife to gently score around the base of the pipe where it connects to the flange. This will break the seal and make it easier to remove.

Step 3: Clean the Drain Flange

Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the two bolts that hold the drain flange in place. Remove the flange and use a damp cloth to clean the surface where it connects to the sink and the pipe. Remove any old plumber's putty that may be there.

Step 4: Install the New Drain Pipe

Step 6: Install the Hairpin Drain Plug

Insert the hairpin drain plug into the drain hole in the sink. Use the hairpin drain plug pliers to tighten the plug in place. Ensure that the plug is secure and that there are no leaks.

Step 7: Test the Drain

Turn on the water faucet in the sink and let the water run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the drain pipe, the P-trap, and the drain plug. If there are no leaks, the repair is complete.
