How to Replace a Gasket Under a Bathroom Sink

A faulty gasket under your bathroom sink can lead to leaks that can damage your floors and cabinets. Replacing the gasket is a simple plumbing task that can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you start, gather the following tools and materials:

New gasket
Wrench
Bucket
Putty knife
Rags
Plumber's putty (optional)

Prepare the Work Area

Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may spill. Cover the drain with a rag to prevent it from becoming clogged with debris.

Disconnect the Water Supply

Locate the shut-off valves beneath the sink and turn off the water supply to the faucets. If there are no shut-off valves, you will need to turn off the main water supply to your home.

Disconnect the Drain Pipe

Use a wrench to loosen the slip nuts that connect the drain pipe to the sink. Detach the drain pipe and allow any remaining water to drain into the bucket.

Remove the Old Gasket

Use a putty knife to remove the old gasket from the drain flange. Be careful not to scratch the porcelain finish of the sink.

Install the New Gasket

Place the new gasket over the drain flange. If you are using plumber's putty, apply a small amount of it around the flange to help seal the gasket.

Reconnect the Drain Pipe

Reattach the drain pipe to the sink and tighten the slip nuts with a wrench. Tighten the nuts snugly, but do not overtighten them.

Reconnect the Water Supply

Turn on the shut-off valves under the sink to restore the water supply. Check for leaks around the gasket and drain pipe. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts or apply more plumber's putty as needed.

Clean Up

Use a rag to wipe up any water or debris. Remove the bucket from under the sink and discard the old gasket.

Tips

If you have a pop-up drain, you will need to remove the stopper before you can replace the gasket.
Do not reuse old gaskets. They can become damaged and leak over time.
