How To Replace Mouldy Bathroom Sealant

Mouldy bathroom sealant is a common problem that can be unsightly and unsanitary. If you have mouldy sealant in your bathroom, it's important to replace it as soon as possible. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

1. Gather Your Materials

Before you start, you'll need to gather the following materials:

  • New bathroom sealant (silicone-based is best)
  • Caulking gun
  • Utility knife
  • Painter's tape
  • Clean rags
  • Safety glasses

2. Prepare the Area

Start by cleaning the area around the mouldy sealant with a damp cloth. Then, use painter's tape to protect the surfaces around the sealant from the new sealant.

3. Remove the Old Sealant

Use a utility knife to carefully score the old sealant. Then, pry it off with a flathead screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the surrounding surfaces.

4. Clean the Area

Once the old sealant is removed, clean the area with a damp cloth. Make sure to remove all of the old sealant and any dirt or debris.

5. Apply the New Sealant

Cut the tip of the sealant tube at a 45-degree angle. Then, load the sealant tube into the caulking gun. Apply a bead of sealant to the area where the old sealant was removed. Make sure to press the sealant firmly into the joint.

6. Smooth the Sealant

Use a damp finger or a putty knife to smooth the sealant. Make sure to remove any excess sealant.

7. Let the Sealant Dry

Allow the sealant to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. This typically takes 24 to 48 hours.

8. Remove the Painter's Tape

Once the sealant is dry, remove the painter's tape. You now have a new, fresh sealant that will help to keep your bathroom mould-free.

Additional Tips:

  • When choosing a new sealant, look for one that is specifically designed for bathrooms.
  • Apply the sealant in a continuous bead. Don't stop and start, as this will create a weak spot in the sealant.
  • If you're having trouble getting the sealant to stick, try using a primer first.
  • To prevent mould from growing on the new sealant, keep the area clean and dry.
