Sometimes, one of your bathroom tiles may get damaged. When this happens, it's not necessary to redo your entire backsplash or shower surround. You can easily replace the broken tile with a new one.

Tools and Materials

  • Replacement tile
  • Grout saw or utility knife
  • Hammer and chisel
  • Tile adhesive
  • Notched trowel
  • Grout float
  • Grout
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Safety First

Wear safety glasses and gloves when removing the old tile and installing the new one. This will protect you from flying debris and sharp edges.

Remove the Old Tile

Use a grout saw or utility knife to score around the perimeter of the damaged tile. Be careful not to cut into the surrounding tiles.

Once the grout is scored, use a hammer and chisel to carefully remove the damaged tile. Be gentle so you don't damage the surrounding tiles.

Prepare the Surface

Once the old tile is removed, use a damp sponge to clean the area where the new tile will be installed. Make sure the surface is free of any dirt or debris.

Apply Tile Adhesive

Use a notched trowel to apply a thin layer of tile adhesive to the back of the new tile. Be sure to spread the adhesive evenly.

Install the New Tile

Press the new tile into place. Use a level to make sure the tile is level with the surrounding tiles.

Grout the Tile

Once the tile is installed, use a grout float to apply grout to the joints between the tiles. Be sure to press the grout firmly into the joints.

Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours.

Clean the Tile

Once the grout is dry, use a damp sponge to clean the tile. This will remove any excess grout and leave your tile looking new.

Tips

  • If you're not sure how to remove the old tile, you can consult a professional.
  • When choosing a replacement tile, make sure it's the same size and shape as the old tile.
  • Be patient when installing the new tile. It may take some time to get it level and secure.
