How To Replace Taps On Bathroom Sink: A Comprehensive Guide

Replacing the bathroom sink taps is a straightforward plumbing task that can be easily completed by a homeowner with the right skills, tools, and materials.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you replace your bathroom sink taps:

1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Pliers
  • Basin wrench
  • Replacement taps
  • Plumber's putty
  • Teflon tape

2. Shut Off the Water Supply:

Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to shut off the water supply to the sink.

3. Disconnect the Old Taps:

  • Use pliers or a basin wrench to loosen the nuts that connect the taps to the water lines.
  • Remove the nuts by hand or with pliers.
  • Pull the old taps straight up and out of the sink.

4. Clean the Sink:

Remove any old plumber's putty or debris from the area where the new taps will be installed.

5. Apply Plumber's Putty:

Roll out a small piece of plumber's putty into a rope. Press the rope around the base of the new taps.

6. Install the New Taps:

  • Insert the new taps into the holes in the sink.
  • Tighten the nuts that connect the taps to the water lines by hand or with a wrench.
  • Use a basin wrench to tighten the nuts further, but do not overtighten.

7. Connect the Water Supply:

Turn the shut-off valves under the sink counterclockwise to turn on the water supply.

8. Test the Taps:

Turn on the taps and check for any leaks. If there are leaks, tighten the nuts further.

9. Apply Teflon Tape:

Wrap a few layers of Teflon tape around the threads of the water supply lines.

10. Connect the Water Supply Lines:

Connect the water supply lines to the taps by hand-tightening the nuts.

11. Clean Up:

Remove any excess plumber's putty or water from the sink and surrounding area.

Tips:

  • If you have difficulty loosening the nuts, apply some penetrating oil to them and let it sit for a while before attempting to loosen them.
  • Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as this can damage the taps or the sink.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the process, consult a qualified plumber.
