How to Rough In Plumbing for a Bathroom Sink

Roughing in plumbing for a bathroom sink is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. By following these steps, you can ensure that your sink is properly installed and ready for use.

Materials You'll Need:

  • PEX tubing (1/2-inch diameter)
  • PEX fittings (elbows, tees, etc.)
  • PEX crimping tool
  • PEX cutters
  • Faucet shutoff valves
  • Sink drain assembly
  • Plumber's putty
  • Steps:

    1. Plan the Layout

Before you begin, determine the location of your sink and mark the studs where you will need to install the plumbing. Make sure that the drain line will be located directly below the sink.

    2. Install the Water Supply Lines

Cut two lengths of PEX tubing and connect them to the hot and cold water supply lines using PEX fittings. Run the tubing through the wall or floor to the sink location.

    3. Install the Faucet Shutoff Valves

Attach a faucet shutoff valve to each water supply line. These valves will allow you to turn off the water to the sink without having to shut off the main water supply.

    4. Install the Drain Line

Cut a length of PEX tubing and connect it to the sink drain assembly. Run the tubing through the wall or floor to the drain pipe.

    5. Connect the Sink

Place a bead of plumber's putty around the base of the sink drain. Insert the sink into the countertop opening and tighten the drain flange.

    6. Connect the Water Supply Lines

Connect the water supply lines to the faucet shutoff valves. Make sure that the hot and cold lines are connected to the correct valves.

    7. Test the System

Turn on the water supply and check for leaks at all connections. If there are any leaks, tighten the fittings or apply more plumber's putty.

    Tips:

  • Use a level to ensure that the sink is installed level.
  • Tighten all fittings securely, but do not overtighten.
  • If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, it is best to hire a licensed plumber.
