How to Seal a Bathroom Sink Drain

A leaky bathroom sink drain can be a nuisance, not to mention a potential source of water damage. If you're dealing with a slow drain or a persistent leak, it's important to take action promptly. Sealing the drain is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few easy steps.

Gather the Necessary Materials

Before you start, gather the following materials:

  • Plumber's putty
  • Drain strainer
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Paper towels or cloths

Step 1: Clean the Drain

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the drain and surrounding area. Remove any hair, soap scum, or other debris that may have accumulated. Use a drain cleaner to dissolve any buildup that might be clogging the drain.

Step 2: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a rope. Place the putty around the base of the drain strainer, forming a seal between the strainer and the sink.

Step 3: Install the Drain Strainer

Place the drain strainer over the putty and hand-tighten it. Use an adjustable wrench to gently tighten the strainer further, but avoid overtightening.

Step 4: Check for Leaks

Turn on the water and let it run into the sink. Check for any leaks around the drain. If you notice a leak, tighten the drain strainer further.

Step 5: Clean Up

Use paper towels or cloths to wipe away any excess putty or water. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using the sink.

Additional Tips

For best results, ensure the drain and sink surface are completely dry before sealing. If the leak persists or the drain remains slow, consider calling a professional plumber for assistance. To prevent future leaks, clean your bathroom sink drain regularly and avoid pouring harsh chemicals or grease down the drain.
