How To Stop A Bathroom Shower Faucet From Dripping

A dripping bathroom shower faucet can be a nuisance, wasting water and increasing your water bill. In most cases, you can fix a dripping shower faucet yourself with a few simple tools. Here's how to do it:

1. Gather your tools

You will need the following tools to fix a dripping shower faucet:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Replacement washer (if necessary)

2. Turn off the water supply

Before you start working on the faucet, you need to turn off the water supply. There will be two valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves off by turning them clockwise.

3. Remove the handle

Once the water supply is turned off, you can remove the handle. There will be a small screw on the top or side of the handle. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw and then pull the handle off.

4. Remove the cartridge

Once the handle is removed, you will see the cartridge. The cartridge is held in place by a nut. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut and then pull the cartridge out.

5. Inspect the cartridge

Once the cartridge is removed, inspect it for any damage. If the cartridge is damaged, it will need to be replaced. You can purchase a replacement cartridge at your local hardware store.

6. Replace the washer (if necessary)

If the cartridge is not damaged, the washer may need to be replaced. The washer is a small rubber ring that sits on the bottom of the cartridge. To replace the washer, simply pull the old washer off and put the new washer on.

7. Reassemble the faucet

Once the washer has been replaced, reassemble the faucet by inserting the cartridge back into the faucet body and tightening the nut. Then, replace the handle and turn the water supply back on.

8. Test the faucet

Once the faucet is reassembled, test it to make sure it is no longer dripping. Turn the handle on and off several times and check for any leaks.

Here are some additional tips for fixing a dripping shower faucet:

  • If you are not comfortable working on the faucet yourself, you can call a plumber.
  • If the faucet is leaking from the base, it may be necessary to replace the entire faucet.
  • If you have a two-handle faucet, you may need to replace both cartridges.
  • If you have tried all of the above steps and the faucet is still dripping, there may be a more serious problem that requires the assistance of a plumber.
