How to Remove a Drain Stopper from a Bathroom Sink

A clogged bathroom sink is a common household annoyance. One possible cause is a blocked drain stopper. Fortunately, removing a drain stopper is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes with the right tools and a little know-how.

Safety First: Before starting, ensure your safety by turning off the water supply to the sink. This will prevent water from spraying everywhere once the stopper is removed.

Required Tools:
  • Adjustable wrench, pliers, or rubber gloves (with grip)
  • Hairpin or small hook (optional)
Step 1: Identify the Stopper Type

There are two main types of drain stoppers: pop-up and lift-and-turn. Pop-up stoppers are typically found in older sinks, while lift-and-turn stoppers are more common in modern sinks. The removal method will vary slightly depending on the type.

Step 2: Removing a Pop-Up Stopper

For pop-up stoppers, insert a hairpin or small hook into the small hole at the top of the stopper. Gently pull up on the hook to release the stopper from the drain.

Step 3: Removing a Lift-and-Turn Stopper

For lift-and-turn stoppers, place a wrench or pliers around the base of the stopper. Turn the stopper counterclockwise to loosen it. Once loose, lift the stopper out of the drain.

Step 4: Cleaning the Drain Stopper and Drain

Once the stopper is removed, take the opportunity to clean it and the drain of any hair, debris, or other blockages. You can use a cleaning brush or a pair of tweezers to remove larger debris. To clean the drain, pour a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for a few minutes, then flush with hot water.

Step 5: Reinstalling the Stopper

To reinstall the stopper, simply reverse the removal process. For pop-up stoppers, insert the stopper into the drain and press down to secure it. For lift-and-turn stoppers, insert the stopper into the drain and turn it clockwise to tighten it.

Tips:
  • If the stopper is particularly stubborn, you can try using rubber gloves to get a better grip.
  • If you are still having difficulty removing the stopper, you may need to call a plumber for assistance.
