How to Wire a Bathroom Fan Light Switch
A bathroom exhaust is very important in removing moisture from a bathroom, helping to prevent mold and mildew buildup. The fan is usually controlled by a switch that also controls the light, but it can be wired to a separate switch. However, if you're not comfortable working with electricity, it's best to call a qualified electrician.
Materials you'll need:
- Wire strippers
- Electrical tape
- Screwdriver
- New switch (if needed)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Turn off the power to the bathroom at the circuit breaker panel.
- Remove the faceplate of the existing switch.
- Unscrew the switch from the electrical box.
- Identify the wires: There should be two or three wires connected to the switch. The black wire is the hot wire, the white wire is the neutral wire, and the red or blue wire is the switch leg. Ground wire is usually bare copper.
- Disconnect the wires from the switch. Use wire strippers to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire.
- Connect the wires to the new switch. The black wire should be connected to the brass screw, the white wire should be connected to the silver screw, and the switch leg should be connected to the remaining screw. If you're installing a new switch, there will be a diagram on the back of the switch that shows you how to connect the wires.
- Secure the wires with electrical tape.
- Screw the switch into the electrical box.
- Install the faceplate.
- Turn on the power at the circuit breaker panel.
- Test the switch to make sure it's working properly.
Tips:
- If you're not sure which wires are which, you can use a multimeter to test them. The switch leg is the wire that has voltage when the switch is turned on.
- If you're installing a new fan, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. The wiring may be different depending on the type of fan.
- If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to call a qualified electrician.
