Install a Drain in a Bathroom Sink

Installing a drain in a bathroom sink is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. Here are the essential steps involved:

New drain assembly

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain

Start by turning off the water supply to the sink and opening the faucet to release any remaining water. Place a bucket under the old drain to catch any dripping water. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the drain flange (the metal ring around the drain opening). Remove the flange and the old drain assembly.

Step 2: Clean the Drain Hole

Use a damp cloth to clean the surface around the drain hole. Apply a bead of plumber's putty around the rim of the new drain assembly. Press the drain assembly into the drain hole and tighten the drain flange with the adjustable wrench.

Step 3: Install the Pop-up Stopper

Most bathroom sinks have a pop-up stopper that allows you to plug and unplug the drain. If your sink has one, insert the stopper into the drain opening until it clicks into place. Tighten the screw on the bottom of the stopper to secure it.

Step 4: Connect the Drain Pipe

The new drain assembly should come with a trap and drain pipe. Connect the drain pipe to the trap by tightening the nuts on both sides. Then, connect the trap to the drain hole in the wall or floor with a slip-nut connection.

Step 5: Turn on the Water Supply

Turn on the water supply and open the faucet to check for leaks. Tighten any loose connections if necessary. Once you are satisfied that there are no leaks, you can finish installing the sink.
