2. Gather Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting, gather the necessary tools and materials, including a trap wrench, adjustable wrench, plumber's putty, and the new trap. Ensure the trap matches the type and size determined in the first step.

3. Remove the Old Trap

Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water. Use the trap wrench to loosen the slip nuts connecting the old trap to the drainpipe and sink. Carefully detach the trap and clean the drainpipe opening of any debris.

4. Install the New Trap

Apply plumber's putty around the sink drain outlet and the drainpipe opening. Position the new trap and hand-tighten the slip nuts. Use the trap wrench to fully tighten them, but avoid overtightening.

5. Connect the Drainpipe and Sink

Insert the drainpipe into the trap and tighten the slip nut connecting them. Connect the other end of the drainpipe to the waste line in the wall or under the sink.

6. Check for Leaks

Turn on the water and check for leaks at all connections. Tighten any loose slip nuts if necessary. If leaks persist, inspect the plumber's putty seal and adjust it accordingly.

7. Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Regularly clean the trap to prevent clogs and foul odors. If you encounter a clogged trap, use a drain cleaner or call a plumber. Periodically check for leaks and address them promptly to avoid water damage.
