Installing a Pop-Up Drain in a Bathroom Sink

Pop-up drains are a convenient and stylish addition to any bathroom sink. They allow you to easily open and close the drain with a simple push of a button or lever. While it may seem like a daunting task to install a pop-up drain, it is actually a relatively simple process that can be completed in under an hour with the right tools and materials.

Materials You Will Need

Pop-up drain assembly
Slip joint pliers
Adjustable wrench
Putty knife
Plumber's putty
Old toothbrush or wire brush
Rags

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Remove the Old Drain Start by turning off the water supply to the sink. Then, crawl under the sink and use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the old drain in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the old drain by pulling it straight down. 2. Clean the Drain Hole Use the putty knife to scrape away any old plumber's putty from the drain hole. Then, use the old toothbrush or wire brush to clean out any debris from the hole. Wipe the area clean with a rag. 3. Apply Plumber's Putty Roll out a small piece of plumber's putty into a rope. Apply the putty around the base of the new pop-up drain assembly. 4. Install the Pop-Up Drain Insert the pop-up drain assembly into the drain hole. Align the holes in the drain assembly with the holes in the sink. Push down on the drain assembly to seal it in place. Tighten the nuts that hold the drain assembly in place using the adjustable wrench. 5. Connect the Drain Pipe Attach the drain pipe to the pop-up drain assembly. Use the slip joint pliers to tighten the connection. 6. Turn on the Water Supply Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts that hold the pop-up drain assembly in place further. 7. Install the Pop-Up Button Install the pop-up button on top of the pop-up drain assembly.
