Installing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed with a few basic tools and materials. By following these steps, you can ensure a properly installed drain that will last for years to come.
Tools and Materials
- Adjustable wrench
- Slip joint pliers
- Putty knife
- Plumber's putty
- Drain flange
- Washer
- Locknut
- Drain pipe
- P-trap
Step 1: Remove the Old Drain
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the locknut that holds the drain flange in place. Once the locknut is loose, you can remove the drain flange and washer.
Step 2: Apply Plumber's Putty
Apply a generous bead of plumber's putty around the rim of the drain flange. This will help to create a watertight seal when the drain is installed.
Step 3: Install the Drain Flange
Place the drain flange over the drain hole and press down firmly to secure it in place. Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the locknut.
Step 4: Install the Washer and Locknut
Place the washer over the drain pipe and then screw on the locknut. Hand-tighten the locknut as much as possible.
Step 5: Install the Drain Pipe
Insert the drain pipe into the drain flange and tighten the locknut using slip joint pliers. Do not overtighten the locknut.
Step 6: Install the P-trap
Attach the P-trap to the drain pipe using the slip joint nuts. Hand-tighten the nuts as much as possible.
Step 7: Test the Drain
Turn on the water and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts or adjust the putty until the leak is stopped.
