Kohler Single Handle Bathroom Faucet Leaking: Identifying and Fixing the Problem

A leaky faucet can be a persistent annoyance, not only wasting water but also creating a potential breeding ground for bacteria. If you have a Kohler single handle bathroom faucet that is leaking, don't panic; fixing it is often a straightforward process. Here are the essential aspects to consider:

Common Causes of Leaks

Before attempting any repairs, it's essential to identify the source of the leak. Common causes include:

  • Worn or damaged O-rings
  • Loose or faulty cartridge
  • Corroded or cracked hoses
  • Defective aerator or spout

Tools and Materials

To fix a Kohler single handle bathroom faucet, you will typically need the following tools and materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Hex key or Allen wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement parts (as needed)

Step-by-Step Guide to Repair

Follow these steps to repair the leak:

  1. Shut off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valves beneath the sink and turn them off.
  2. Remove the handle: Use the hex key or Allen wrench to loosen the set screw on the handle. Then, gently pull the handle straight up to remove it.
  3. Remove the cartridge: Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the cartridge retainer nut. Pull the cartridge straight up to remove it.
  4. Inspect and replace the cartridge: Examine the cartridge for any damage or wear. If damaged, replace it with a new cartridge of the same size and type.
  5. Inspect and replace O-rings: Remove the old O-rings from the cartridge and faucet body. Clean the surfaces where the O-rings sit and apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the new O-rings. Install the new O-rings.
  6. Reassemble the faucet: Insert the cartridge back into the faucet body and tighten the retainer nut. Reattach the handle and tighten the set screw.
  7. Turn on the water supply: Slowly turn on the shut-off valves and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, the repair is successful.

Additional Tips

  • If the leak is coming from a cracked hose, remove the hose and replace it with a new one.
  • If the leak is coming from the aerator or spout, unscrew and remove the aerator or spout and clean or replace it.
  • If the leak persists after following the above steps, it may be necessary to contact a licensed plumber.
