Replacing the Stem in a Bathroom Sink Faucet

A dripping faucet can be a nuisance, but it's also a waste of water and money. If you're dealing with a leaky faucet in your bathroom sink, the problem may be with the stem. Replacing the stem is a relatively simple task that can be completed in just a few minutes with the right tools.

Tools You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Allen wrench or hex key
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Replacement stem

Steps to Replace the Stem

  1. Turn off the water supply. There will be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to close them.
  2. Open the faucet to release any remaining water. This will help prevent water from spilling out when you remove the stem.
  3. Remove the handle. Most faucet handles are held in place by a screw on the top of the handle. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the screw and then pull the handle straight up to remove it.
  4. Remove the packing nut. The packing nut is located just below the handle and is used to keep the stem in place. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut and then remove it by hand.
  5. Remove the stem. The stem is located inside the packing nut. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the stem and then pull it straight out to remove it.
  6. Install the new stem. Insert the new stem into the faucet body and tighten it by hand. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the packing nut over the stem.
  7. Reinstall the handle. Push the handle back onto the stem and secure it with the screw.
  8. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Open the shut-off valves under the sink and turn on the faucet. Check for any leaks around the stem.

Tips

  • If you're not sure which stem to replace, take the old stem to a hardware store and ask for a replacement.
  • If the leak is coming from the base of the faucet, you may need to replace the O-rings.
  • If you're uncomfortable replacing the stem yourself, you can call a plumber for assistance.
Replacing the stem in a bathroom sink faucet is a simple task that can be completed in just a few minutes with the right tools. By following these steps, you can save yourself money and the hassle of a leaky faucet.
